The Mummer's Parade on New Year's Day is not unlike Jazz....you either get it or you don't.
Here is the 2012 String Band winning performance by Woodland. My kids and I,along with some friends...watched on Broad street and saw 13 of the 17 Bands. A few beers and cocktails and the unique sound of Mummers String Bands. These things really make a New Year's day...better than slugging on the sofa nursing a hang-over and watching some 3rd rate Football.
One of our guests was my daughter's friend from College. She is from Amherst,Mass. She got it...really loved it. Happy New Year everyone.
Ah, the Mummers. Hard to describe, nothing quite like them. Memories linger of childhood watching them on strut their stuff, and then in young adulthood, boozy and warm while watching from the Union League. Have to get back there again soon.
ReplyDeleteAh the Mummers! I have three distinct Mummers memories- first as a high schooler circa 1974 about ten Schlitz deep, hooting and hollering with pals. Second as a smug 30 something, single malt in hand, deigning to view the masses from a living room high up in the Academy House condominiums, and finally as a sober, older and happier man finally truly appreciating the parade while standing in the cold Broad Street air. Love the Mummers!
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys are fans....see you Broad st. next year!
